From Health to Wealth: The Impact of Employee Wellness on Success

In our previous article, we discussed the importance of continuous learning to remain relevant and thrive in one’s career. Of equal importance is the need to be healthy, in both body and mind, as a healthy employee is a valuable asset to any organisation.

Unhealthy employees lead to increased absenteeism and greater medical expenses. This affects the organisation’s cash flow and insurance costs. Even if an employee’s sick leave is unpaid, recurrent absences disrupt workflow which becomes detrimental to the customers, the company, and the employee.

Absent employees miss out on their pay and can cause delays that impact both internal and external clients. These delays hurt their performance, reducing their chances of future growth whether in terms of incentives or in probability of promotion.

For example, one company I worked with faced similar challenges. In response, they prioritized employee wellness and encouraged healthy living with exercise programs. The progress was tracked through metrics like weight reduction, blood sugar control for those with diabetes, and blood pressure management.

As the company was headquartered in the USA, privacy laws obliged self-reported data over formal health checkups. Amazingly, the company lost a few tons, as thousands of employees reported collectively to losing a few kgs. As a result, the company became healthier, sick leaves decreased, medical claims declined, while client engagement scores increased alongside an increase in repeat purchase.

Employees can follow a few simple steps to lead a healthier life:

– Exercise Regularly: Set aside time, either in the morning or evening for physical exercise. Also include mental wellness activities like meditation.
– Eat a Healthy Diet: Maintaining a nutritious, balanced diet is important for sustained energy and productivity throughout the day.
– Engage in Physical Activities: Play sports like cricket or badminton. Enjoy outdoor activities such as trekking, jogging or swimming to stay active.
– Stay Consistent: Self-discipline is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, aim to make these habits a part of your daily routine.

Organisations can also support their employees in leading healthier lives:

1. Organise Health Challenges: Create individual or team competitions focusing on wellness goals like achieving highest step count in a week. Companies can offer incentives for participation and awards or recognition.
2. Provide Dietary Support: Provide employees access to a professional dietitian to help them make healthier food choices.
3. Offer Wellness Infrastructure: Support health programs with resources such as regular meditation sessions or onsite exercise facilities.

Investing in employee wellness benefits both individuals and the organisation, leading to a healthier, more productive workplace that ensures long-term growth and success. Please share your experience of what has been the impact of wellness on your business and career?
