Learnings from my son’s wedding
On December 13th, 2024, my son Varun and his partner Ishani, whom he met during their MBA at The Wharton School, celebrated their wedding. It was a truly joyful occasion, marking the union of two brilliant, kind-hearted individuals. If it had been up to me to choose a match for Varun, I couldn’t have imagined anyone as perfect for him as Ishani.
The weeklong celebration blended fun, emotion, and unforgettable memories. Family and friends from around the world came together to bless the couple. I was deeply moved by the participation of friends of Ishani and Varun from The Wharton, National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, Maneckji School & IIT Delhi. To see such a large, diverse gathering of people who had influenced Varun and Ishani’s lives was truly overwhelming.
I’m also grateful to my friends from IIM Ahmedabad, NIT Raipur, Burgess School, and Sainik School, as well as my ex-colleagues, clients, & the WE-Matter team. Some guests traveled from as far as Singapore, Canada, and the USA, and I’m especially thankful for their effort to join us.
A special mention goes to Mr. Raj Babbar and Mrs. Nadira Babbar, who honored us with their presence and blessed the couple while standing in line like everyone else. A young colleague remarked that it was humbling to see so many well-known figures interact with old friends as if they were back on campus. This humility was truly inspiring.
What impressed me the most was how my colleague Paree & my younger son Shourya (both Gen Z) took charge of organizing the reception. Their meticulous planning and flawless execution ensured everything went smoothly. They were supported by a fantastic team of colleagues and friends, including Sabby, who ran the bar in his signature style. I’m deeply grateful to all of them.
Lessons learned:
1. Trust Your Children to Choose Their Life Partner
Children often make better choices than we expect. Their experiences and understanding guide them to the right partner.
2. Give Young People Responsibility – They’ll Deliver
Gen Z is more than capable of handling significant responsibilities. Shourya and Paree’s leadership during the event showed their ability to organize and execute with grace and competence.
3. Relationships Are Our Greatest Asset
The people we surround ourselves with—friends, family, mentors—are the true assets in our lives. Relationships enrich us personally & professionally.
4. Humility is Key
True greatness is reflected in humility, not wealth or status. Humble individuals are more respected and likable, and this lesson was clearly embodied by everyone at the wedding.
5. Plan Ahead, Execute with Precision
The seamless execution of the wedding was proof that planning, & timely execution, with an eye for detail, are critical to success.
Relevant for families & businesses.
Wishing Varun & Ishani a lifetime of love, happiness, and growth together!
