What did I learn from Mr Ratan Tata?
This was more than 2 decades ago. I used to work with Tata Strategic Management Group (TSMG). As directed by Mr Ratan Tata TSMG had to go global ahead of the Group companies. My CEO assigned me the job of going global. To begin with we focused on South Asia and had few successes in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
I had an opportunity to meet Mr. Tata at a group dinner. I shared with him the success in South Asia. He congratulated me warmly in front of other senior colleagues. I felt very good.
As people gathered in groups, Mr Tata and I had some private time. He said, “Prashant, these countries are our younger brothers. They need our help. Please focus on helping them grow. As they succeed they will pay you back more than you expected.” That was humbling.
I learnt from him to focus on the client’s growth and clients will help us grow. I followed this principle ever since, As a result, we have always outperformed our competition in every organization that I worked for.
W.E. continue to follow this philosophy and focus on client growth. Clients are helping us grow exponentially. We had clients helping us grow even during Covid.
