Why do companies often prioritize customers over employees? It’s natural for companies to think that customers are everything. After all, they bring in revenue, shape demand, and control market success. As Mr. Sudarshan Jain, former CEO of Piramal Healthcare Group and at present Secretary General of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, puts it: β€œI have been a marketing person all through my life and thought that the customer is everything. Organizations exist for customers.”

What changed Sudarshan Jain’s view on employee importance?

The turning point for Mr. Jain came during his tenure at the Piramal Group in 2008, when the organisation conducted its first employee engagement survey. He avers: β€œPrashant helped us draw meaningful and impactful insights. I realized that unless you have a great and highly engaged employee team, you cannot make a difference to the customer.”

The insights improved the company culture and significantly increased its value, leading to Abbott’s acquisition of the company at an exceptional valuation which was 10 times the sales and 35 times the profit.
